Information on System Requirements, Instructions, and Troubleshooting for Interactive CDs

System Requirements:

An Interactive CD should work with most computers made in the last few years. It should be used in a system running Windows 95, 98, NT (with Service Pack 4), 2000, ME, or XP. Windows Media Player, which comes with all versions of Windows by default, is recommended. Direct X v.3 or better is recommended. It is recommended that you have a processor that works at 266MHz or faster—preferably, Pentium II or better. (This software has been tested on an older [1996] computer with a 166MHz processor, among others; and, while working on the computer, the video is sluggish, as well as the background music when viewing documents.) It is also recommended that you have at least 32MB of RAM. A Sound Card, which should come with most computers, is required. A graphics card capable of 256 colors at 800x600 is needed (minimum), but a graphics card capable of 16 million colors at 1024x768 is recommended. Mouse. CD ROM drive.

Instructions:

This CD is set-up for AutoRun. This means that you should simply be able to put it in your CD ROM player, wait a minute or so, and it will run automatically, with a menu popping up in a short period of time. If for some reason this doesn’t occur within a reasonable period of time, eject the CD and then re-load it. It doesn’t install anything to your system and runs entirely from the CD.

If you have your CD player’s AutoRun feature disabled – or if it doesn’t automatically start on its own after inserting the CD – simply go to your computer’s CD drive (in “My Computer” from your desktop) and double-click on the icon.

After the menu pops up, you will then have the choice of watching a video, watching a slide-show with auto-play background music, or reading several articles. When you go to watch the video or slideshow, simply click on the “play” button to begin. It may take a few seconds to start. Some of the large pages of text may also take a few seconds to display themselves after clicking on the button. (The length of time all depends on your computer’s processor speed and the size of the object.)

All pages in this CD have “exit” buttons. Additionally, you can use the ESCape key to exit, or you can press the ALT-F4 keys at the same time to exit as well.

Troubleshooting:

This interactive CD has been tested on several computers and been found to work properly. Providing you’ve got the minimum system requirements, it should work properly in your computer too. Each CD has been tested individually before shipping.

You should not be running other applications at the time of this CD. Particularly, if you are running another application that is accessing your Sound Card in the background (such as something that is playing music in another program), it may interfere with the video’s playback and any other features as well.

If your video still seems somewhat sluggish or is working improperly (but is still working somewhat - and you do not have any applications accessing your sound card), it may be because you have other programs running in the background that are accessing your computer’s processor and memory. Many people don’t realize it, but some programs are running even when they’re not intentionally activated.

To speed up a sluggish video or sound, if you are running Windows, you can right-click on some of the icons on the bottom-right portion of your screen (on the bar) and then select “close.” Additionally, with Windows, you can press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys at the same time and select individual applications to close at a time. If you do this, you MUST leave “Systray” and “Explorer” running or it will cause temporary problems with your system. NOTE: On WindowsNT, Windows2000, and WindowsXP, there are other programs that MUST be running in the background in addition to “Systray” and “Explorer,” but I’m not certain what they are. You know what you installed, so your guess is better than mine. But if your system can handle XP, it is doubtful that you’d have problems anyway – unless you have an old computer with a new operating system.) To re-activate all those programs that you shut down this way (with the keys Ctrl-Alt-Delete), simply re-start your computer from the Start menu.

If you’ve tried the above and that still doesn’t help improve the video speed, with the applications mentioned above closed, have the CD in its drive but exit out of the interactive CD from the menu. You can then find your computer’s CD drive (in “My Computer” on your desktop) and then find the program’s icon inside. Right-click on the icon, and select “Explore.” Now, you should be able to find the video file, and double-click on it. This should activate it. After activating, you can then select “View,” and then “Zoom” from that list. While playing the video, select a smaller size video (such as 50%) if still slow. This may help.
Only CDs shown to be defective may be returned for an even exchange.
