Cardinal Ratzinger Becomes Pope Benedict XVI, Causing Worry to Some Jews
Jewish Activists Alarmed Over Pope’s Nazi Background

Today, Cardinal Ratzinger was appointed Pope. He has long been a staunch advocate of typically conservative activism within the Catholic hierarchy. Indeed, he is opposed to homosexuality, abortion and other forms of deviant behavior. Many Jews have opposed his appointment, and it’s not just because of his moral background, which some Jews and others find alarming.
Pope Benedict XVI’s long history has disturbed many Jews.
When Ratzinger was 14, he joined the Hitler Youth.
Later, he joined the Nazi army, serving as an anti-aircraft gunman near a BMW plant. Many Jewish slaves from the Dachau camp reportedly worked there.
Later, he was sent to Hungary, where he put together tank traps.
He was required by law to join these organizations, though some have argued that he should’ve remained defiant. “It was possible to resist, and those people set an example for others,” said Elizabeth Lohner, who had a brother that was sent to camp for objecting to the war. “The Ratzinger [brother]s were young and had made a different choice.”
During the course of his work in the church, he developed many nicknames due to his staunch conservative beliefs: “the enforcer,” “the panzer cardinal,” and “God’s rottweiler.”
He eventually oversaw what had once been called, in times of the past, the Inquisition.
In 1987, Ratzinger upset many Jews when he said that Jewish scripture and Jewish history would not lead to fulfillment.
Such statements have led to him being accused of “theological anti-Semitism.”
Later, in 2000, he signed the theological document, Dominus Jesus, which angered some Jews and others. It stated, “Only in the Catholic church is there eternal salvation.”
One liberal theologian was asked what he thought of Cardinal Ratzinger before he was appointed Pope. He responded, “It fills me with horror.”
It is not known if his appointment will have any difference in the outcome of a lawsuit orchestrated by Jews against the Vatican Bank. Many Jews have organized and filed a lawsuit for possibly as much as $100 million against the Vatican Bank, suggesting that Catholics were somehow responsible for their fate in WWII.
Undoubtedly, the new Pope is a brilliant man. He speaks 10 languages. He has been a professor of many colleges, including the University of Bonn, the University of Munster, the University of Tubingen, and the University of Regensburg. He also co-founded the Catholic paper, Communio, which is one of Catholicism’s most respected papers, which promotes traditional Catholic values.
Many Catholics and others, concerned about the way that the Catholic Church was headed, have welcomed Ratzinger’s appointment. They hope that he continues to be a force of morality and decency for the Catholic Church, and that he defies the forces against the Catholic Church, who are trying to bankrupt it in any way imaginable.
