President Bush Should Be Impeached over Plame’s CIA-Identity Leak
Protecting a Known Felon is Grounds for Impeachment
by Mark Farrell
(HMT) President Bush had remarked some time ago that he would prosecute whoever
had leaked the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame. Revealing the identity of a
CIA agent is a felony. The reason it is a felony is that CIA operatives are
often traveling abroad and working undercover, and they may be targeted for
execution if their identity is revealed. Additionally, someone from another
country might recognize the CIA operative from a previous mission, and decide to
target that CIA agent’s family in an act of retaliation. This is why it is a
felony, as it endangers the CIA agent’s life, the lives of the CIA agent’s
family, and it also jeopardizes national security. Therefore, President Bush
does not have a choice of prosecuting Rove, as to ignore this would be illegal,
since he would be using his position as President to protect a known felon.
We all remember the case of Nixon. Some of his subordinates committed felonies,
reportedly unbeknownst to him. As a result of trying to stave off the
investigation and protect his friends, he was impeached. The same now must apply
to President Bush: If he does not prosecute Rove, a known felon, then Bush is
acting illegally and completely unethical in his position, the highest in the
land.
Some Republicans of late have said that Rove did not commit any crime. This is
because Rove reportedly said that he had garnered his information from a
reporter. And who was this reporter who told Rove this? Of course, he has
conveniently forgotten, if there ever was one.
Someone who would unethically tell a CIA agent’s identity might also be prone to
lie about other things, possibly making up a story of an imaginary reporter. Of
course, the White House is trying to have the buck stop there, letting this
“convenient lapse of memory” item be dismissed. In an interview with Fox News,
Ken Mehlman, the Republican National Committee Chairman, said that Rove is
entirely innocent:
"What it says is, Karl Rove wasn't the leaker, he was actually the recipient of
the information, not the provider. . . . So there are probably a lot of folks in
Washington who have prejudged this, who have rushed to judgment who are trying
to smear Karl Rove."
Even if Karl Rove does have a convenient lapse of memory regarding the reporter
who told him this information, providing that he is telling the truth on this
matter (and the book is not closed on that yet), since he was the one who
revealed this information to the press at-large, prior to there being any
published reports of such, he is guilty in any case. Additionally, there is no
reason to suggest that any reporter would have been privy to this information,
so it stands to reason that Rove is not completely honest here.
There are no reports of Plame’s CIA-identity prior to Rove’s discussion with
reporters about this. It stands to reason that it was simply an act of revenge
by the White House: Bush’s staff, if not Bush himself, were upset that Plame’s
husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, wrote in an op-ed piece that White House was
using contrived evidence concerning “Weapons of Mass Destruction” (WMD). The
reports of fictitious WMD were the reason for the Iraqi War--what the White
House used to justify it with these false claims.
It seems that the White House decided to get Wilson back for revealing the truth
about the WMD--by endangering his family’s lives.
Of course, we all know that there have been many “errors,” to use the nice term
here, with these claims of WMD.
The biggest error, however, is occurring right now, with Bush not prosecuting
Rove, as he had promised to do so with the “leaker.” Is Bush willing to
sacrifice his position as President to protect Rove, who would be punished after
Bush’s impeachment, if it comes to that, in any case?
Rove has committed a felony, and now he must be punished.
The only question remains is whether President Bush should also be impeached.
